HydroSHEDSv2 Core Data Downloads

Data format and layers

HydroSHEDS v2 core raster layers are distributed in GeoTIFF format at 1 arc-second resolution, equivalent to approximately 30 m at the equator. Raster data are provided as 10 × 10 degree tiles for flexible download and processing, as well as continental composites for users working at broader regional scales.

Vector data are provided in both a zipped Esri File Geodatabase and an OGC GeoPackage (.gpkg), supporting compatibility with a wide range of GIS platforms and spatial analysis workflows.

Additional spatial resolutions may be provided in future releases or produced upon request, depending on user needs and technical feasibility.

Downloads

The following tabs provide data downloads for the currently available products for specific geographies. Raster data is primarily available as 10x10 degree tiles, whereas vector data, such as rivers and catchments are available for larger regions as geopackages.

The raster layers are produced seamlessly and distributed as 10x10 degree tiles or as regional groupings (e.g. continents). All 10x10 degree tiles are named with a 7-digit identifier based on the coordinates of their lower-left (southwest) corner, e.g. n40w080.

This section provides HydroSHEDS v2 raster products as GeoTIFFs at 1 arcsecond resolution. Currently we provide Flow Directions and Flow Accumulation raster. Other layers and regions will follow soon.

Flow Direction raster: The Flow Directions raster represents the drainage directions as a raster file, containing eight values of possible directions in which water can flow from pixel to pixel. Each raster cell is assigned a code for the direction that is coded as: 1 = east, 2 = southeast, 4 = south, 8 = southwest, 16 = west, 32 = northwest, 64 = north, 128 = northeast, and 0 = sink (no direction). The raster tiles are provided as an 8-bit unsigned integer cloud-optimized GeoTIFF raster (LZW compressed).

Flow Accumulation raster: The flow accumulation raster provides the count of upstream pixels that drain into each cell. As values of flow accumulation tend to be very high, relative to the size of watersheds, the data is delivered as 64-bit decimal point cloud-optimized GeoTIFF raster (LZW compressed).

This tab provides HydroSHEDS v2 data by region. The map below contains regions for which aggregated data is available. Currently we provide the following products as regional layers:

The River Network (RIV) represents the river network generated from the flow directions, as well as corresponding node points. A flow accumulation threshold of 1 square kilometre was used to define the start of river reaches. Data are provided as both a zipped Esri File Geodatabase (GDB) and an OGC GeoPackage (GPKG).

The HydroBASINS layer (BAS) represents a polygon layers that depicts sub-basin boundaries. It has been extracted from the gridded HydroSHEDS core layers at 1 arc-second resolution. The dataset is the predecessor (beta version) of HydroBASINS. Data are provided as both a zipped Esri File Geodatabase (GDB) and an OGC GeoPackage (GPKG).

The Flow Direction raster and the Flow Accumulation raster (see description above) are available as continental cloud-optimized GeoTIFF raster composites (TIF).
